Be Born Again

Paul said, “11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now, we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” 1 Cor. 13:11-12 (NKJV)

“1And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?” 1 Cor 3:1-4 (NKJV)

Have you wondered why the Lord Jesus said these words to his disciples?

“19 He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” Mark 9:19

“40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” Mark 4:40

“Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” 33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” 34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.” Luke 22:31-34

Step 1. Be Born Again.
Growing spiritually is another word for a Christian who is born again, to mature in Jesus Christ. Mature in what? But before we go any further on in this study, can we tackle this question:

How does someone get born again?

Ok! Let’s ask each person beside you if they are born again? Ask how, when, and where did they have this experience. The Hebrew word for “Born Again” is “yalad”—to bear; bring forth; beget; It means to be born from above. Jn.3:1-17; Ro.9:9-10; The Holy Spirit births God’s life in the believer. Eph.2”1; “23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.” 1 Peter 1:23; Col 1:13

At the end of this word, we may have to lead some people to Christ and ask them to pray the sinner’s prayer. (Do you know what the sinner’s prayer is?) It may come as no surprise that lots of individuals who go to church have never had personal knowledge or entered into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. They just grew with the church. 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12. How will you want to have this kind of experience in Matt. 22:11-12.

Therefore, the first step to growing spiritually is to be Born Again.

Paul said, “11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now, we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” 1 Cor 13:11-12 (NKJV)
“1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?” 1 Cor. 3:1-4 (NKJV)

Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

What does being filled with the Holy Spirit have to do with a believer growing spiritually? First of all, let’s see the why and importance of the Holy Spirit. Matt.3:11; Now to show why we need the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, the Son of God was filled with the Holy Spirit: Matt 3:13-17; next, Jesus Christ instructed His disciple to wait to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Acts.1:8; and the disciples were filled as they waited as were commanded. Acts 2:1-4; A confirmation to Apostle Peter and the other Apostles that God has visited the gentiles was their being filled with the Holy Spirit: Acts 10:44-46; Apostle Paul’s first question to certain new believers as if they have been filled with the Holy Spirit? Acts 19:1-7

The question now is who is the Holy Spirit? Is He a God? Does He have personalities? What is His mission or purpose in the world and in the believer? How can a believer be filled by the Holy Spirit? Can the Holy Spirit leave a believer?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In other words, we have One God manifesting Himself in three persons, and these three are One. 1 Jn.5:7; The Holy Spirit is God because He is in the same class as the Father and the Son, Jesus Christ. Jn 14: 26; 15:26; 16:13-15—He is addressed as “He” by Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit has personalities. In other words, the Holy Spirit can see, talk, fill, and act just like human beings. Mk.3:29; Acts 5:3; Acts 13:2

The mission or purpose of the Holy Spirit is as the Lord Jesus Christ pointed out in Lk.4:16-19; A believer gets born again by the power of the Holy Spirit (regeneration), sealed, baptized, justified; it is the Holy Spirit that empowers the believer in Christ to live a victorious and successful Christian life. No human can please God, overcome the flesh and Satan without the Holy Spirit. Ro. 8:6-14; Gal 5:16-18

The fruits of the Spirit is from the Holy Spirit. Gal.5:22-23; the gift of the Spirit comes from the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor 12:1-11

A believer can be filled with the Holy Spirit just as the early disciples where filled with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:1-5; The believer must be free from all erroneous teachings, or else it will block the free flow; he/she must receive Him by faith by asking personally for His infilling, or through laying of hands by another believer already filled by the Holy Ghost.

What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Discuss. It means to be “Baptized”. Acts 1:5. The word “Baptized” means to “be completely submerged, be under.” After this initial infilling of the Holy Spirit, which means a believer being “completely occupied by God”, there is no room for the flesh. What is the evidence when a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit? Discuss. The answer is right there in Gal. 5:22-24. The believer is completely under the sway, movement, guidance, and leading of God.

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Gal 5:16-18 (ESV)

Why do you think the believer needs to be constantly filled? Does the Holy Spirit get used up or drain out? Discuss. After the initial infilling, from God’s design or construct, the believer needs to remain or stay occupied by God—His Spirit. But what happens is, because we are still in the world with its distractions, diversions, pollution, struggles, and the possibility to sin (Gal 5:14-17), we get drawn away from church attendance, reading and applying His Word, living holy (living sinless), praying, and fasting constantly, God’s life does not occupy us as God intends. That is why the Lord Jesus counseled His disciples to abide in Him. Jn 15:1-8

Can the believer in Christ get to a point or level in life where he or she does not to be filled anymore? Discuss. I don’t think there can ever be that level. Two key indicators that I see that you can use to measure that are (i) when that believer is “independent of all circumstances” Philp.4:11-12 (ii) when that believer is “an addict for Christ” 1 Cor.16:15, Gal 2:20

How does the believer get constantly filled? Discuss. To be constantly filled, the believer need to go out every day to get a fresh manner (His word) and learn how to live in obedience (Ex.16:4-5, 18-21, 26-27; Jn.15:7); pray and seek him always. 1 Thess. 5:17; live/practice a separated life or holy living (sinless) He.12:14

Pray in the Spirit

Paul said “11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” 1 Cor 13:11-12 (NKJV);
” 1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.

STEP 3: PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT. (This lesson can be taught in two sessions.)

Read I Cor.14:1-20.

See what verse 4 says “4 When a person speaks in another language, he helps himself grow. But when a person speaks what God has revealed, he helps the church grow. 1 Cor 14:4 (God’s Word Translation)

What does speaking in tongues mean? Discuss. Speaking in tongues is an expression of the Holy Spirit through the believer. In other words, it is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

Read Acts 2:1-4 in the Amplified version.

What we read in 1 Cor.14 gives a very clear explanation as to the gift of speaking in tongues but also how to use it or its application in the right place and context.

How does speaking in tongue make a person grow spiritually? Discuss. Many people see speaking in tongues as showing off or just babbling. When really understood, it is the most precious thing one can ever have and a moment one can be in.

The question that is asked and expressed by some is—how can one speak in tongue on his or her own —after the first time of being baptized in the Spirit? It does not sound real or right like the first. “It looks mechanical,” which is making it up. Let’s discuss. What do you think?

In 1 Cor. 14, we see that speaking in tongue is not a onetime impartation of the Holy Spirit in the believer. In fact, the blessing or the purpose of the gift of tongues is in it “REUSE”. When you got filled the first time, it is because you opened your spirit—the bottle of your soul and spirit, and God poured His Holy Spirit into you, and you drank Him, and the expression following that experience is the speaking in tongues. Don’t you want to get filled again when your bottle is empty or when you become tasty? Therefore, each time you speak in tongue, it is time to open that bottle so that God can fill it again. Now, what happens, or the result or outcome, may not always be like the first time. It all depends on the environment, moment, and state of mind you are in. But the point here is, you want to open that bottle and drink of the Lord. Let’s look at two things here:

a)“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God.” 1 Cor.14:2. The word “speaketh” here agrees with verse 14, meaning to pray. A believer through the Holy Spirit can begin to express thoughts or words—making petitions, supplications, intercession, etc., which cannot be understood from any natural standard or interpretation. Rom 8:26; But a balance is needed. 1 Cor.14:15

b)”He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself.” 1 Cor.14:4. The word “edifieth” means what? Discuss.

It means to refresh, inspire, and build up. How? Discuss.

See 1 Cor.14:26.

Speaking in tongues has its purpose, and one of it is that the believer is refreshed, recharged, and satisfied in his or her spirit. Someone said a believer in Christ should spend at least 24 minutes each day speaking in tongue. Therefore, it is what it does. There is that “God feeling” in you when you speak in tongue. It is like getting high. You look clean and holy. When you get into that ecstasy moment, when your senses are shut up or off from the realm of the world and the flesh, everything about God comes into view. Every time this takes place, many things happen in the believer: conviction takes place, there is flushing out—of bad thoughts, bondages are broken, deliverance takes place, and you get closer to God. We should have moments each week in our services when occasions should be given for believers to be encouraged to express themselves in tongues.

Live Holy

“7 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.” Gen 39:7-10 (NKJV)

I Thessalonians 3:3-8; 4:4

Can we live a holy and sinless life today? Can we still find virgins among our young men and women? Can we acknowledge that there are singles not sleeping around and whose garments are white and unstained due to sworn oath of piety? Can we find married couples that are not cheating on their spouses and flirting with their ex’s and other people’s husbands or wives? Let’s discuss.

“48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matt 5:48 (NKJV)

“26 And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.” Lev 20:26 (NKJV)

The world today cannot know who the genuine and true Christians are from the fake (not walking or living their lives according to the ways, word, and life of God) ones.” 25 Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year. They assembled with the church and taught great, many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Acts 11:25-26

Society is sick and tired of compromising and conforming believers that do not have the guts and strength to live a separated Christian life and to say “NO” and stand for that, which is true. Let’s read Daniel 3:1-30.

“16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.” Dan 3:16-18 (NKJV)

What is Holiness? Discuss.

Holiness is the purity of thought, purity of motive, and purity of action. 27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matt 5:27-28.

What is the consequence of unholy living? Discuss.

You block and hinder your blessings and stand the risk of not making it to heaven. He.12:14; You defile God’s altar and invoke God’s wrath and judgment. Lev.10:1-3; you limit your ministry, respect, and anointing of God upon your life.

How can we live a life of holiness?

Separate yourself from places, anyone or anything that is causing you to sin or disobey God. 1 Cor.5:1-2; ii) by amputation—spiritual surgery; may need to go through deliverance (but it will be of no use if you give yourself to the word, spirit, and fasting). Matt.5:29-30.

Read Eph.5:3; 1 Cor.6:12-20

Understand Spiritual Authority

One of the greatest challenges to the church is how members see or treat their spiritual leaders. The measure of a church or individual maturity is their understanding of spiritual authority. You can be around authority and never know authority. You can teach about spiritual authority and never live it and instead abuse the very authority you teach.

What is spiritual authority? Discuss. Spiritual authority is God’s mandated leadership. It is someone whom God has called, elected, chosen, and appointed to perform the task of oversight on God’s flocks or sheep.

I tried to get away from this teaching. But the Holy Spirit kept this teaching before me. “Tell my people, why so many of their prayers go unanswered and why their anointing is stalled or things not going as they supposed to, is because of the way they treat their “Man or Woman of God”.

When it comes to spiritual authority, respect for the man or woman of God is huge. Anytime you are in the presence of or pass by a true man or woman of God, two things take place, either you get cursed or a blessing is impacted upon you. It all depends on what side you are on or see them or treat them.

22 So the water remains healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke. 23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” 24 So he turned around and looked at them and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths. 2 Kings 2:22-24 (NKJV)

How do you identify a true man or woman of God? Discuss.

One of the closest means or ways of God blessing and opening doors of blessings to you is sending a man or woman of God your way or placing a spiritual leader over you.

“11 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ 1 Kings 17:11-14 (NKJV).

Read 2 Kings 4:8-14.

It is not because he or she is an overseer, bishop, or pastor, or are they something or someone special, and neither are they to claim the first position or place, as Elijah did to this vulnerable, frail and weak woman. They are the first in God’s house as far as God is concerned. No one chooses or confers spiritual authority (spiritual gift revealed in the five-fold ministries. Eph.4:8-10) upon a woman or man; only God does the choosing. That is why it is called spiritual authority. They are God’s appointees, and the hiring and firing are His. Nu.12:1-8. Same is true of Deacons(ness). 1 Tim 3:8-13; Romans 13:1-13.

Are there those who appoint themselves as pastors, evangelists, teachers, apostles, and prophets? How do you know they are false? Matt.7:15-16

“15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Matt 7:15-16 (NKJV)

The first point of call in any matter of business, war, marriage or family, is your spiritual father or mother. 2 Kings 3:6-12; 4:1-7; 6:1-3. Those who really understand spiritual authority will never bypass a spiritual leader to do anything without first consulting or talking with him or her. This means taking the matter to the first in command and not the second or third in command, except where such matter has been delegated or assigned. Whenever you bypass a spiritual leader, you diminish his or her authority, and that means diminishing God’s authority.

Whenever your spiritual leader eats, laugh, or joke with you and discusses ministry matters with you, that places you on the very tight spot of spiritual alert for promotion or demotion, depending on whether you lost the line of familiarity and allow contempt. The church needs to be cleaned, things need to be moved, or some equipment needs to be purchased, and you could do it, but you didn’t, and instead, allow your man or woman of God to do it. Your blessing immediately gets blocked. You are in a car, and you can drive, but your spiritual leader is driving, and you are just enjoying the ride. If this happens, your blessing just left the window. If there is an event, and you can cook the breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but didn’t. Instead, you allow your first lady to cook for you, and you sit down to eat. You just staved your blessing. God expects the pastors, ministers, deacons, and deaconess to relieve the Bishop or seniors pastor the burden of serving tables so as to give themselves to the Word and to Prayer. But instead, they are stressed with trying to do all the tasks of the men, women, and the congregation. Acts. 6:1-8

Whenever you get into a competitive spirit with your man or woman of God, your anointing, blessing, and life freezes. A friend or member of the church calls or sit to gossip, criticize or talk about your man or woman of God, and you allow or entertain what they have to say. You open the door immediately to satanic invasion, oppression, and attacks. The last person you should be upset with is your man or woman of God or spiritual father or mother. Your spiritual father or mother may be off sometimes in their attitude or way they treat you, that does not mean you can disrespect them or act foolishly towards them. I Sam 1:12-end

The majority of church members will consult with everyone else in the world on all issues and matters of this life except their man or woman of God. You have no idea the blessings that your man or woman of God releases into your life when you can get their prayers and counsel before you travel or venture into any project or business.

Fresh Manna

FEED YOUR SPIRIT DAILY WITH HIS WORD

THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL WERE TOLD TO EAT FRESH MANNA.
EXODUS 16:14-21

WE KNOW WHAT THIS MANNER REPRESENT IN THE NEW COVENANT

“Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'” Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” 35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:31-35 (NKJV)

GOD SAID FURTHER ON THIS SUBJECT
“So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” Deut. 8:3 (NKJV)

WHY DID GOD INSTITUTE AND INSIST ON A DAILY COLLECTION OR GATHERING?

Ex. 16:16-19

“This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ” Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. So when they measured it by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one’s need. And Moses said, “Let no one leave any of it till morning.” Ex. 16:16-19 (NKJV)

We are not to live on yesterday’s anointing, but to upgrade our lives each day; the believer’s life, like the WORD (JESUS) John 1:1, is living, breathing and growing, Heb 4:12, 1 Pe.2:2; God’s steadfast love never ceases, they are new every morning; God is constantly upgrading (revealing things) to his people; this is the Habakkuk’s call. Hab. 2:1

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN SOME DID NOT WANT FRESH MANNA?

“Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.” Ex. 16:20-21 (NKJV)

Disobedience often leaves us with disappointments, dryness, failure, and difficulties. Obedience is to be receptive to God’s orders or ways of doing things, and when we walk in his word, the blessings follow.

Evangelism
“After these things, the Lord appointed other seventy also and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.” Luke 10:1-2 (KJV)

YOU HAVE BEEN APPOINTED

“the Lord Appointed other seventy also”

The first thing you have to understand about this life in Christ is winning souls or bringing people into His Kingdom. Meaning, you have been chosen and appointed by the Lord to win souls. Being “appointed” here means you have been screened, interviewed, rated and approved.
Based on God’s qualifying standard of grace, He has found you fit, capable and able to bring unsaved people into His kingdom.

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” John 15:16 (KJV)

Every believer in Jesus Christ has the awesome capacity to win people to the Lord through His indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Who the Lord appoints, He equips or enabled.

“And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.” Matt 10:1

WHY DO WE NEED TO WIN SOULS?

Because sinners are lost and doomed for hell’s destruction, God has no delight in the death of the wicked, and they need someone to warn them. Eze.18:4; 20; 33;7-19

“TWO BY TWO”

“and He sent them two by two”

After the Lord appointed the disciples, he paired them—two by two, as they went out. Why did the Lord do this? There may be various reasons as to why the Lord Jesus did this. First of all, the word God says, “in the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word will be established.”; the scriptures also teach that “two are better than one”. I believe in the two advantage, while one person is doing the witnessing or sharing the word, the other should be praying silently to God for effectiveness and grace; the two advantage also is seen in terms of warding off any mindset in people to victimize or take advantage of any child of God. In most cases, one believer can become vulnerable and become the victims of evil schemes and evil perpetrators. There is strength in two. Besides, it is also good to pair an experienced soul winner or more experienced child of God with a younger person in the lord or in soul winning. The younger can learn from the older.
But the blessing of two is such that one serves as a support or helper for the other. The spirit of teamwork cannot be best placed but in this strategy of the Lord.
